Happiness Tool: Freeing Oneself from Resentment

Activation of one’s happiness takes time and effort. There are many different tools to help. And there are many ways to practice by deliberately exercising the psyche.

One such mental “workout” that I originally learned from Louise Hay in her book, “You Can Heal Your Life“, is an exercise original created by Emmet Fox. It is fantastic for helping rid yourself of anger and resentment at other people’s actions, of which you have no control. Wishing for an apology or feeling hurt only damages the self. Instead use the strength of the mind to change the emotions connected to the person.

Fox suggests finding a comfortable, welcoming location where you can relax and feel completely at ease. Be sure that it is an area where there will be no chance of interruption.

Sitting or laying in a comfortable position, start to breath deeply. Concentrate on each breath becoming longer, enveloping your entire body. When you feel completely relaxed start to picture in your minds eye a beautiful theater. Imagine the intricate details of the theater: the stage, the lowered lighting, the seating and where you are seated, the curtains, the floor, the ceiling. Imagine your entire surroundings. You are seated comfortably and completely at ease.

Now imagine the person attached to your resentment standing in the center of the stage. See their clothing. Their face. In to their eyes.

The person does not have to be alive or someone that you are still in contact with. This applies to all people, despite the time and location.

Once you see this person clearly as they are, start to imagine amazing, fantastic  things happening to them. Imagine them succeeding at becoming the best person that they can be. Imagine them achieving their highest potential. See the person joyful and radiant from their heart.

Keep your attention on this image for a few moments. When you are ready let this person walk off the stage and fade from your reality.

(This section was added by Louise Hay…)Now imagine yourself in all ways positive standing on the stage. Imagine yourself receiving amazing abundance. Imagine incredibly positive things happening to you. See your dreams actually happening. See yourself glowing, happy and fulfilled in all ways.

Stay on this image for as long as you need. When you are ready bring yourself back to your surroundings do so by slowly stretching and gently coming back to the now.

This is an excellent exercise for understanding that the wonderful abundance of the universe is available to all.

For me, this happiness workout was not so easy to do in the beginning of my journey down my happy path. And at times, the feelings of justification for resentment have had a tug-of-war with letting go.

But in the end my practice has helped with my overall state of joy.
